FACTS about Sockeye Salmon

At West Beach, people and Salmon don't mix.

The facts are:

The adult Sockeye Salmon arrive in September - October when there are few people on the lake.

The Sockeye Fry emerge in April - May well before our boat launch is even useable, and only spend 2 - 3 weeks on the shores of the shuswap before heading off into the deeper waters.

To learn more about these amazing fish, please check out this informative website, run by the Adams River Society.

HISTORY

Formerly known as Cottonwoods Campground, this property was first settled as part of the homestead of Bill & Helen McKay in 1908. They eventually moved to Vancouver, but continued to own the land and rent it out for many years.

In 1940, they sold the farm to the “Lawrence New” family who started the Cottonwoods RV Campground in 1960 featuring over 200 RV Sites, a number of cabins, two large docking facilities, and a boat launch. For forty years, during the summers, 1000’s of people would come to swim, play, dance, and moor their boats at what would later become the Kamloops Yacht Club.

For generations, people have created special memories here while enjoying their summer vacation with family and friends.

In 2007, New Future purchased this spectacular waterfront property and saw the potential for a model development that would showcase the best practices of environmental stewardship and sustainable planning. West Beach Village will demonstrate how people can continue to live in harmony with nature.

Without history, there is no future. Therefore, we are preserving the log cabins, one of which is the original McKay homestead which dates back to 1907. We will post the Cottonwood story and include archived photos and artifacts in the original log cabin planned to be converted to an interpretive centre.
